Shakespeare as a modern day writer

Hello!! Welcome back to another blog.

I have often talked about how Shakespeare influenced countless modern day writers. His work consisted of themes and characters that are still universally relatable. We as a society might have progressed tremendously in the last 400 years in technology but the from the point of view of thinking we have not progressed a lot. Racism, sexism, classism amongst many others still exist in our society and most of this was covered in Shakespeare's plays. So, what would happen if he was a modern day writer, what would have happened if he existed in the 21st century? If his themes are so relatable, would his writing have changed at all? I will explore these questions in this blog.

From the hundreds of pieces of work that Shakespeare has written, one can say that he was an outstanding dramatist. What is outstanding about his dramas is that it is a mind-blowing blend of deception and naturalism. He used stage conventions to a great effect. From something that was deep and moving to something scary, all of this with a sense of humor always present. He often played around these stage conventions to make his plays interesting and alive.

His work consists of a lot of detail, but in most of his work, the message isn’t clear to the general public. Sure, the main idea is easily understood and open for interpretation in the best or in the worst ways, but he does (or did, whatever) have a certain something to his work. His message goes a lot further than appearances if you are to analyze every word and every small detail. His style would be the same, but written in modern English. He was very aware of his audience, and wrote with the clear intention of engaging and keeping that audience. He knew very well that if his work didn’t sell tickets, his income would suffer. Coming from a poor background, i think he would prefer a career wherein he earned good income.

Moreover, nearly all of Shakespeare's plays are based on existing histories and stories, but once he had taken the material over and passed it through his own sensibility and that of his characters, the resulting work was evidently his and his only. So it is highly possible that as a modern novelist,  Shakespeare would be less a broad formal generator of forms than a genius in exploring and illuminating and transfiguring existing narrative materials and tropes.

Here, i could have a controversial opinion but Shakespeare would not be as famous or known to the general public if he existed in the 21st century. He is such a significant and legendary playwright because as a writer in the Elizabethan era, he wrote and played hundreds of plays that shaped not only the culture and literature of the language in which they were written, but in the centuries to come they would continue to shape the global culture in nations that were then undreamed of, that maybe are still undreamed of. Shakespeare's writing style is a product of his place and time as much as his own voice; he was part of an artistic scene that shaped him as much as he shaped it. What Shakespeare was doing then was something that still exists now and that is running a theater company and/or writing plays. However, he could be making movies right now and maybe even be writing a blog since that is where an individual can earn more money.

Agreed, that is plays were more than just money since they have shaped modern day literature into what it is today but I am pretty sure Shakespeare did not write the plays with the intention to make students in the 21st century write tests on "how Romeo created drama in a particular scene", rather he wrote it with the intentions that his plays would be a success and earn him some money.

Therefore, as “popular” as theater is nowadays, he probably wouldn’t be as famous as he is right now. As a novelist, unless his style fit the now-adored cliché rom-com story, it would still be appreciated, if not as recognized as it is.
